Question:
Does breastfeeding invalidate ablution?
Answer:
Alhamdulillah, praise and thanks to Allah for the countless blessings He has blessed us all with. Blessings and salutations to the Prophet Muhammad PBUH, his wives, his family, companions and all those that follow his teachings to the day of judgement.
The matters that invalidate ablution are stated in fiqh books and are placed under a specific chapter.
According to Syeikh Salim bin Sumair al-Hadhrami and Syeikh Hasan bin Ahmad al-Kaaf, there are four matters that invalidate ablution:
- Something comes out from either the anus or vagina.
- Loss of one’s consciousness due to sleep with the exception that his buttocks are in a stationary position.
- Skin contact between an adult ajnabi man and woman.
- Touching the private parts of a human with the palms or inner part of his fingers.
(Refer Al-Mujtaba fi Syarh Safinah al-Naja, pg. 38 dan Al-Taqrirat al-Sadidah, pg. 100-103)
It is also explained that anything that comes out of the private, if it is not najis, then it does not invalidate ablution. (Refer Al-Mausu’ah al-Fiqhiyyah al-Kuwaitiyyah, 17/113)
Then, we find that breastfeeding a child is not included as matters that invalidate ablution.
Wallahua’lam.
