Question:
Assalamualaikum. Can you explain on the hadith which states that Allah SWT loves people of good character and hates people with bad conduct?
Answer:
Waalaikumussalam.
Alhamdulillah, praise and thanks to Allah for the countless blessings He has blessed us all with. Blessings and salutations to the Prophet Muhammad PBUH, his wives, his family, companions and all those that follow his teachings to the day of judgement.
We will start with a hadith of the Prophet PBUH narrated by Husain bin ‘Ali RA, where the Prophet PBUH said:
إِنَّ اللهَ تَعَالَى يُحِبُّ مَعَالِيَ الأُمُوِر وَأَشرَافَهَا، وَيَكَرهُ سَفْسَافَهَا
“Indeed, Allah SWT loves honoured and high manners (character) and Allah SWT abhors filthy matters (conduct).”
Narrated by al-Thabarani in Mu’jam al-Kabir (2894) [This hadith is evaluated as sahih by al-Albani in his Silsilah hadith number 1890]
Fiqh of the Hadith
According to this hadith, there are several fiqh al-Hadith that we can extract from it:
- The meaning of معالي الأمور is good and honoured character. Whoever displays such characters are loved by Allah SWT. While the meaning of سفسافها is anything that is bad and filthy. Whoever acts this way is abhorred by Allah SWT.
- In the Quran there are several verses of the Quran which shows that Allah SWT encourages His slaves to always race in doing good and if one sets out to do something, he should do it the best he can.
- The Prophet PBUH is the best of example as stated in numerous hadiths and statements of Allah SWT: “There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent pattern,” Surah al-Ahzab (21). Thus, we should follow the example of the Prophet PBUH in every aspect of our lives regardless in matters of this world or the hereafter.
Lastly, may Allah SWT make us from among those with good character and conduct. Amin.
Wallahua’lam.
