Question:
What is the status of this hadith?
The Prophet PBUH said: “I’m telling you this tonight, indeed, at the end of a hundred years, there will be none from among you who will still on this earth.”
Answer:
Alhamdulillah, praise and thanks to Allah for the countless blessings He has blessed us all with. Blessings and salutations to the Prophet Muhammad PBUH, his wives, his family, companions and all those that follow his teachings to the day of judgement.
- From Abdullah bin Umar RA, Once the Prophet (ﷺ) led us in the `Isha' prayer during the last days of his life and after finishing it (the prayer) (with Taslim) he said:
أَرَأَيْتَكُمْ لَيْلَتَكُمْ هَذِهِ، فَإِنَّ رَأْسَ مِائَةِ سَنَةٍ مِنْهَا، لاَ يَبْقَى مِمَّنْ هُوَ عَلَى ظَهْرِ الأَرْضِ أَحَدٌ
"Do you realize (the importance of) this night?" Nobody present on the surface of the earth tonight will be living after the completion of one hundred years from this night."
Sahih al-Bukhari (116)
Imam Ibn Hajar said: “In this hadith, Ibn Umar RA explained what the Prophet PBUH wished from the hadith is that after the end of the century, then there will no one who was present when the Prophet PBUH said these words would still be alive. It is observed after analysis, among the last of the companions of the Prophet PBUH who was included on that night was Abu Thufail Amir bin Wathilah RA. The consensus of the scholars of hadith state that the last of the companions passed away on the 110th year which is at the end of the century stated by the Prophet PBUH.” [See Fath al-Bari, 75/2]
Conclusion
As a conclusion, the hadith shows that the Prophet PBUH knew the matters of the unknown through revelation from Allah SWT. This is among the signs of his prophethood and the truth of the message that the Prophet PBUH preached. Lastly, may Allah SWT bless us with a good ending in this world and protect us from a dreadful ending. Amin.
